Donald Trump’s Golden ‘Scam’ Phone Under Fire As Buyer Shares What Really Happened After Ordering

Journalist Joseph Cox, writing for 404 Media, tried to place a pre-order shortly after the phone was announced. But what he encountered was a glitch-filled mess that made him seriously question whether the phone is even real—or at least ready for release.

“I tried to pre-order the phone and pay the $100 downpayment.” Cox wrote in his personal review, before adding, “but the website failed, went to an error page, and then charged my credit card the wrong amount of $64.70.”

Although he wasn’t charged the full amount, Cox did get a vague email from TrumpMobile.com. It said he would get another update when the device shipped. But the weird part was, he never provided a shipping address or paid the full $499 price tag.

Even more frustrating, Cox said he couldn’t access his Trump Mobile account. Every time he tried to log in or reset his password, he got error messages. “It is the worst experience I’ve ever faced buying a consumer electronic product.” he added in his write-up, continuing, “and I have no idea whether or how I’ll receive the phone.”

Cox’s experience quickly caught attention online, with plenty of people sounding off. Many shared similar confusion and disappointment, especially around the website’s performance and the lack of clarity during the purchase process.

One Reddit commenter joked: “What’s up? Got scammed by the president?”, while someone else offered a warning: “If you’re going to buy this, at least use a credit card for fraud protection.”

Alongside the technical troubles, there’s growing concern about the phone’s security. Several critics are questioning whether users’ personal data is safe and whether the phone might leave them vulnerable to surveillance—even from within the country.

Donald Trump Jr. has responded to those criticisms. He pointed out that the phone’s “American-made” design should make it less likely to include foreign spyware. But for people who value privacy, that reassurance hasn’t eased the worries. As Reuters reported, concerns are still very much alive.

At this point, it’s still unclear whether the T1 Phone will deliver on all its promises. What’s obvious right now is that the early buying experience has raised more eyebrows than excitement, and left potential customers wondering if this golden gadget is actually ready for prime time.
