70-Year-Old Woman Who Used Her Late Son’s Sperm To Have A Baby Through Surrogacy Shares Life Update

A well-known Spanish actress made headlines around the world a few years ago when she made a deeply personal and unconventional decision using her late son’s sperm.

Ana Obregón was left devastated after her son, Aless Lequio, lost his life to cancer in 2022. Wanting to honor what she says was his final wish to become a father—she made plans to carry that out in his memory.

By 2023, Ana had welcomed a new baby into the world via surrogacy. The child was conceived using her late son’s sperm.

Later, Ana clarified that the baby girl, named Anita, is actually her granddaughter—not her daughter, as many had assumed.

“This girl is not my daughter, she is my granddaughter. She is Aless’ daughter and when she grows up I will tell her that her dad was a hero, so she knows who he is and how proud she should be of him,” Ana said during an interview with ¡Hola! magazine back in April 2023.

More recently, while speaking to Spanish television, Ana shared how much joy baby Anita brings into her life, even as she continues to grieve the painful loss of her son Aless.

She shared that her house is now filled with toys and cuddly animals. She added: “I even have a little ball pool where she makes me dive in.”

However, she also admitted that some moments with Anita, like picking her up, are becoming harder on her physically. As Anita grows, Ana is finding it tougher to keep up due to back pain.

She also took a moment to reflect on the emotional shock of being told her son had a rare and aggressive cancer at such a young age.

The 70-year-old actress went on to say: “We live our whole lives saying that we are eternal and nothing happens here.”

“Suddenly, one day they tell you at 25 years old that you have an aggressive cancer.”

“You think, that’s not what they told you when you were little. So I have many more fears with Ana, more than when I had Aless.”

When Ana made it public that the baby was born through surrogacy, it sparked a wave of controversy in Spain. The unusual circumstances of her case, along with the fact that surrogacy is banned in Spain, only added fuel to the fire.

Although surrogacy isn’t allowed in Spain, adopting a child born abroad is legal. Anita was born in the United States via a surrogate. After her birth, Ana officially adopted her, which made her Anita’s legal mother.

In past interviews, Ana spoke openly about how much losing her son Aless shattered her. She described those three years after his death as some of the darkest she’s ever faced.

She said that Anita’s birth gave her new purpose and helped bring her back to life emotionally.

In a special feature with ¡Hola! magazine celebrating Anita’s second birthday this past March, Ana opened up again and said“I know I’ll never feel the happiness I had when Aless was with me again.”

“That pain will never go away. You don’t accept or get over the death of a child.”

“You end up accepting that you’ll never be able to come to terms with their departure.”

“Fortunately, Anita now fills my days. I was dead for three years from Aless’ death until Anita was born… Life is a breath of fresh air.”
